Inspection ratings provide valuable external validation, but they are not a complete answer. A school can have a strong rating and still be a poor personal fit for your child. The reverse is also true.
Use inspection reports to identify strengths and recurring concerns, then test those themes on a visit. Read trend lines over several years if they are available.
Read beyond the headline
- Look at the phase relevant to your child
- Check comments on teaching consistency and wellbeing
- Compare the rating to parent experience and student outcomes
- Notice whether the school is improving or plateauing
The best use of inspections is as one input in a wider decision, not as a substitute for family judgment.
